Pittsburgh, and the tunnels & bridges, what a site to see!

3 11 2008

Well let me just start off by saying, where is ALL the information about the bridges & tunnels???? I have found very little if any information.. I love Pittsburgh and hope to move there upon graduation. I found it shocking that there isn’t more information out there! Most of the information that I have found isn’t positive or even informational, I have had several opportunities to visit and the sky line is beautiful there.
I plan on posting pictures of the many different bridges & tunnels while I am there this coming weekend, I hope that everyone sees the beauty the bridges & tunnels add to the area. Through the pictures I believe you will see how truly unique the area is. Not only do these bridges & tunnels add character to the area, but they also contribute to the “go green” , which has been the way everyone is headed in todays society.
( There are of course other reasons for me wanting to reside there, I am studying nursing and Pittsburgh has the nations leading medical center).

Editorial Final Draft……

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has many bridges and tunnels, while many of them are in need of repair. Many of these counties are unable to complete these needed repairs. Although many city officials are making excuses for why the moneys shouldn’t be used for repairing these bridges at this time due to budget short falls, however, without these bridges and tunnels many things would not be able to be shipped as effectively. Pittsburgh produces 98% of America’s coal and without this coal many things could not be operated. For example what would you do if you were not able to turn on the lights in your place? What happened in your area the last time people went without power? Remember all of the shortages and watching people panic? Everyone needs these bridges and tunnels to be kept up and maintained, despite the fact that some people feel that it is not important to them due to the fact that they don’t live in that area. The bigger effect would be that people could not afford alternate resources to maintain their own power supply and it would eventually affect everyone, if transporting of these good were compromised.

While safety is the most important detail of maintaining these bridges and tunnels, let us not forget the historical relevance these bridges and tunnels also add to the area. If you were to visit the greater Pittsburgh area, you would see that there are so many bridges and tunnels and you might even wonder why anyone would want to live there, travel there, or even visit there. To sum it up in one word BEAUTY, however there are many other words that can be used to describe the area. A word a critic would use would most likely be frustrating! I would call that person someone who like me hasn’t spent enough time in the area to know exactly where they are going. I have on several occasions found myself driving down the wrong bridge or even through the wrong tunnel with no where to turn around. I get frustrated. Then I look around at the magnificent buildings and the three rivers joining through the area, and it just seems to relax me in some way.

Pittsburgh also has many other reasons why these bridges and tunnels are needed and must be maintained for example: historic and development reasons. These bridges and tunnels have often led to Pittsburgh being referred to as the steel city  which in terms of our worldly economic situation signals a dying resource. With steel being replaced by a newer cheaper metal like aluminum, and then other steel being bought from a cheaper outsource. Where the price being cheaper, rather than American made is the more important than using our own products.

There is simply much more than a dying steel city to Pittsburgh, they have the nation’s leading medical center, they also have found many interesting and new ways of reusing materials that others have not yet chosen, and utilizing their own bridges, tunnels, and waterways for ways to cut down on fuel demand. Which also helps promote a cleaner and better air quality throughout the Pittsburgh area.

What would happen if people were to find their lives changed by having to find a means of a newer more expensive source of power, could everyone afford it? How about the storms that recently affected your area and left thousands without power, what changed in your own life and what if it happens again, what will people do this time? Many people simply do not have the funds or means to find another power source. How can we change this, what can we do as a nation to stop this from happening? Meaning if everyone is simply saying that it does not matter due to the fact that they believe that would not affect them simply because they do not reside in this area is crazy, because it would affect everyone. It would limit everything that we need in order to maintain our current lifestyles and everyone should be concerned about this problem.

We all need lights, heat, water, and many other things that require the use of coal and also a means of distributing it throughout the nation. Everyone needs to speak up and find means of making sure that these bridges and tunnels are maintained to ensure that the products that we need to keep the power and supplies, are supplied to the nation without any disruptions.
